What is a "registered donee", and why do you only give to them and not directly to individuals in need?
A registered donee is a registered charity. According to Canadian law for a fundraising agency to have registered charity status the organization must donate 80% of the funds raised to registered donees. They are not permitted to give directly to individuals.
What is the catchment area for the BDAF?
We serve the Greater Toronto Area. This includes all of Toronto, York Region, Peel Region and Durham Region.
How was this organization founded?
This organization was co-founded by three front line Case Managers who saw first hand the needs that were not being met for people living with various challenges. As Case Managers they worked closely with resource centres, group homes, hospitals, subsidized housing, schools, food banks, employment agencies, cultural and religious groups and families. They saw that a grass roots organization was needed to deal with an issue that can easily be invisible to those not face to face with it.
Why did the BDAF pick the Sunflower as its symbol?
Did you know a sunflower is not actually one flower? The center of the flower is in fact made up of over 2000 small flowers. This symbolizes how when enough people come together for a common goal, it can be achieved. The sunflower also captures the Better Day Alliance's optimistic view of humanity. Regardless of what is going on around it, the Sunflower always faces towards the brightest part of the sky, and as a result it grows sturdy and blooms.
How much government money does the Better Day Alliance Foundation receive?
The BDAF has not received any funds from the government. We believe it is, not the government, but the people of our community that are best equipped to give in the spirit that is needed. This is why it is so important for people like you to make the choice to give generously.
